Are You at Risk for Colon Cancer?

Are you 50 years of age or older?
The older your age, the greater your risk for colorectal cancer. With each decade past age 40, you become at a higher risk for colorectal polyps and cancers.

Do you have a history of colorectal polyp or cancer?
If so, you have a greater risk of getting more polyps or having a recurrence of cancer.

Do you have a family history of polyps or colorectal cancer?
The abnormal genes in the cells lining the colon which allow polyps and cancers to develop are sometimes inherited. In most cases, however, the genes become abnormal by chance because of carcinogens (cancer-producing chemicals) in certain foods.

Does your diet consist of more fats than fiber?
Eating too much red meat and animal fat and not eating enough fiber or fresh vegetables can result in a higher risk for colorectal cancer. Obesity can also Increase your risk.

Screening for cancer before you have symptoms can help your Physician find polyps or cancer early. Finding and removing polyps may prevent colorectal cancer. Also, treatment for colorectal cancer is more likely to be effective when the disease is found early.

Take a second look at the risk factors and symptoms and if you have any concern please talk with your Primary Care Physician. If you do not have a Physician, you may call the number below and we will assist you in this process.
