Childbirth Education Classes
Pregnancy is a most remarkable time. Along with the joys you experience, come many questions. The AMC Birthing Center Staff would like to assist you by offering informative classes for all phases of your pregnancy, delivery, and recovery. Inside you will find class descriptions and registration information. All classes are held in the prenatal classroom on the third floor, beside the Birthing Suite.
Prenatal Class (Childbirth Preparation)
This class is designed for the mother in her last trimester to aid in preparation for the “big event.” Classes include signs and symptoms of labor, stages of labor, vaginal and cesarean births, recovery, breathing techniques, relaxation techniques, body conditioning exercises, medical options, helpful hints for coaches, tour of the birthing suite, and a childbirth movie. This class is held on 4 consecutive Monday or Tuesday evenings per month from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM. The series also includes 4 Wednesday night or Thursday night classes. Topics include breastfeeding, CPR, newborn care and parenting, for a total of 8 classes.
Refresher Class
This class is designed for those wishing to review labor and delivery process, breathing and relaxation techniques, body conditioning exercises, and an update on medical options. Attend 4 consecutive Monday or Tuesday night classes.
Breastfeeding Classes:
This class covers the benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby, how breastfeeding works and addresses questions and concerns of the new parents. The goal is to help you avoid common problems. Everyone is encouraged to attend. The class is offered on Wednesday or Thursday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00 PM. It is included in the Prenatal Class Series or can be taken independently.
Infant CPR
This class will teach you how to do CPR on a child less than 1 year of age and how to help a choking infant. The proper methods and techniques will be demonstrated and time will be provided for practicing each technique.
Newborn Care
This class explores what to expect from your newborn and how to meet your baby’s basic needs including diapering, bathing, and feeding. Come get some hands on experience. Class is offered on Wednesday or Thursday evenings from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM. It is included in the Prenatal Class Series or can be taken independently.
Parenting Class
This class explores the challenges, fears, fun, and humor of being a parent. It will provide some practical hints and helps for success and survival. Class is offered on Wednesday or Thursday evenings from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM. It is included in the Prenatal Class Series or can be taken independently.
Sibling Class
This class is for “brothers and sisters to be”. It reinforces their special place in the family and can help them adjust to the idea of a new baby. Children must be ages 3-8 years to attend. Class is held one Saturday per month at 4:00 PM. Please call for dates.
